Abigail Annette Hedman

Belize, which was known as British Honduras until 1973, was the last British colony on the American mainland and gained its independence from the United Kingdom on September 21, 1981. Abigail Annette Hedman came from the land of the Mayan, Yucatec, Mopan, and Q'eqchi Maya. She immigrated from Belize to the United States in the 1920s. Although she was born in Belize, little is known about her early life there. Tragically, she died at a young age after becoming the mother of three children, leaving only a limited record of her life in the United States. Yet her legacy endures through her descendants, who remember her as a guiding presence whose sacrifices and love helped her children flourish and become part of California's history.
